About Reeg MX

Interview With Kim Reeg
5 Minutes With Kim Reeg
MiniMoto Magainze - Issue Five - 2004

On or off the track, Kim Reeg is a true competitor and his passion for building the perfect mini is second to none. We got hold of Kim on his way up to the SweetBud race in Washington and got him to fill us in on what he's been up to.

MiniMoto: Kim, tell us a little about yourself.

Kim Reeg: I have been a motorcycle racer all my life. I started out on a Honda 100 and used to beat a lot of two-strokes with it. I was actually torn down at a lot of races because they thought my engine was oversized. That started my love of four-strokes.

MM: How did you get involved in the mini scene?

KR: I bought an XR50 for my grandson when he was a month old. I figured he would not be riding it for a while, so I started tinkering with it. I then started getting into the horsepower thing, as well as making it handle better and pretty soon I had created a full blown monster, which is fine with me because I love this stuff.

MM: So is this the reason why you started Reeg Engineering?

KR: Well, actually Reeg Engineering has been around for quite a while. I have had my own machine shop for over 15 years, and I have been a machinist for over 25 years. I mostly have been a job shop where people bring drawings in and I make whatever it is they need, but now I pretty much only work on motorcycle related stuff for CRF50s and 70s.

MM: Tell me a little about the products you are offering for the CRF50 and CRF70.

KR: What I am trying to do is see how far we can develop these small sized bikes. I want to see how well we can make them handle. The bikes we have are run on full sized motocross tracks and I am just trying to make them as fast as possible and improve the handling. I am totally into more horsepower, bigger engines, and better handling bikes. I want my products to be the best products available, which will lead to the best bikes possible.

MM: How do you go about testing your products?

KR: We go racing (laughs!) We go to the big races; I have a guy who races for me named Chris Stewart and we go battle with the top guys every week. We will drive 500 miles to Starwest for a Wednesday night race because that is where all the top competition is. That is where you will find all of the fastest guys to race against. That is how we test our parts. We also test our parts on a local track, but racing the bikes is where the real testing takes place. Depending how a part performs during a race will determine whether or not the part needs to be changed or if we should keep it or not.

MM: So it is safe to say that all of your parts have been race tested?

KR: Definitely. That is what it is all about.

MM: Your latest project is a CRF70. Why did you choose this bike over a KLX or DRZ110?

KR: Well, I like red bikes. I have always been a Honda fan, and I feel that the 70 has the potential to beat a 110. Right now I am working on an engine project that will create some serious power for a CRF70, which will make it extremely competitive against a 110. Seeing that a CRF70 has a 12" rear tire that offers much more traction than a 10" CRF50 tire, the CRF70 can easily handle more power.

MM: Any hints as to what displacement the engine will be?

KR: I guess you could say that I am not going to sell anything under 125ccs, and that I am only looking at large displacement engines.

MM: With all the testing you have been doing on top of running your business, do you still find time to ride?

KR: Well, I had been riding up until four or five months ago when I wadded myself up pretty good off a jump and messed up my shoulder pretty bad. At this point, I just want my shoulder to heal before I get back into riding. Right now I have three awesome rides; Chris Stewart, who is a local guy, as well as two guys from Texas (Steve Halpain and Justin Miller). These guys are in a league by themselves. They practice non-stop and their skill level is amazing. At the Motofest at the ARCO Arena, my bikes finished first, second, and third in the 50 class and we walked away with a half the purse money. They just dominated the track. I guess you could say I am blessed to have three really fast riders, so if I am not racing for a while, I can live with that.

MM: It sounds like your bikes have what it takes to win. What does the future hold for Reeg Engineering?

KR: Well, I want to take 50s and 70s and small four strokes and raise them to the highest level possible as far as being able to race around a motocross track as fast as possible. I want my bikes to be the best handling bikes and produce the fastest lap times possible. That is what I am aiming for.

MM: If I wanted to improve my bike by using your parts, where would I go to get more information?

KR: My website has all the information you need. You can order off the web site, which is quick and easy. Once your parts order has been placed, the parts will be shipped out either that same day or the next.

MM: Sounds pretty painless to me, what is the website address?

KR: It is www.reegmx.com or you can call 916-933-7090. If you have any questions, just give us a call and we will be glad to help you out.
